Travis Head is currently the leading run-scorer of the BGT 2024-25.
As the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 moves to Melbourne for the Boxing Day test, the fourth of the series, Australia remain worried about the fitness of batsman Travis Head, their most in-form and best batsman of the ongoing series.
Head is dealing with a quad issue that he picked up during the third test in Brisbane. While batting during Australia’s second innings at the Gabba, Head looked in discomfort and limped between the wickets.
He then also didn’t take the field during India’s brief second innings.
While Australia captain Pat Cummins, after the Gabba test, said that Head has “a bit of a tight quad, he’ll be fine for Melbourne,” the left-hander’s participation in the MCG test isn’t certain yet.
According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Travis Head missed Australia’s net session on Monday, though it was an optional one. The report added that Head completed running and a gym session on Monday and will have a fitness test on Tuesday to determine his participation for the fourth test at the MCG.
Travis Head is the leading run-scorer of the series
Head has been the standout batsman of the series with runs in all three games. In five innings, he’s scored 409 runs – no other batsman has even 250 runs – at an average of 81.80 with two centuries and one fifty.
At the post-match presentation in Brisbane, Head said, “It’s been a big couple of weeks. But I’ll be fine.”
Meanwhile, Australia have handed maiden test call-up to youngster Sam Konstas, who is expected to make his debut in Melbourne, replacing Nathan McSweeney, who scored 72 runs across six innings and struggled horrendously against Jasprit Bumrah. Scott Boland is set to return to the XI, replacing the injured Josh Hazlewood.
Australia’s squad for last two tests against India:
Pat Cummins (capt), Sean Abbott, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Sam Konstas, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Jhye Richardson, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, Beau Webster
