Virat Kohli scored 17 runs in the first innings of the Sydney test.
Debutant Beau Webster made a good first impression as a safe fielder in the slip cordon by taking two good catches in the first couple of sessions of the 5th BGT 2024-25 test that got underway on Friday at the SCG.
The man who failed to make a positive impression, though, for India was their superstar cricketer Virat Kohli, who got out outside-edging the ball behind for the seventh time in this series.
With Rohit Sharma omitted from the SCG test – stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah said Sharma had “chosen to rest” himself – the scrutiny is on Kohli more now. It’s not as much of Kohli’s form slump in test cricket that’s worrying but more that, it’s the fact that he’s been getting out regularly fishing outside the off-stump.
The weakness has been taken to the levels of his horrendous 2014 tour of England as all of his seven dismissals on this Australian tour have been caught in the slips or wicket-keeper.
Boland got Kohli for the third time in this series. It was a terrific ball on the fifth-sixth stump line. The ball was angled in and outside the off-stump. Since it was angled in, Kohli was sucked into the temptation of having a feel of it. But the delivery straightened after pitching and took the outside edge which was grabbed brilliantly by Webster.

Kohli walked back dejected, frustrated, with his head down as he’d let the fans and himself disappointed once again. He went for for 17 off 69 balls after lunch. He’d done well to survive in the first session on a green-ish pitch, after getting a reprieve when Steve Smith grassed a tough, low chance as Kohli nicked Boland on the first ball he faced.
His series numbers read: eight innings, 184 runs, average of 26 with a highest score of 100*.
