Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli got involved in a mix-up that resulted in the opener’s run-out.

India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal had a heartbreaking end to his terrific innings in India’s first innings of the fourth BGT 2024-25 test match at the MCG as the left-hander got run out after a mix-up with Virat Kohli, falling 18 runs away from what would have been his second century of the series.

Jaiswal and Kohli’s solid partnership had steadied India after they had lost two wickets, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, for 51 runs. The young opener and senior No. 4 batsman had posted a stand of 102 runs and were looking set to take India through to stumps on day 2 at the MCG.

However, lack of proper communication led to Jaiswal’s run-out. Jaiswal tapped Scott Boland to mid-on and set off for a quick single.

Kohli, who had taken a couple of steps out of his crease, turned around to watch the ball go straight into mid-on’s hands instead of responding to Jaiswal’s call for a single.

The senior batsman, infamous for being involved in several run-outs throughout his career, returned back to the non-striker’s crease, while Jaiswal had come almost in front of Kohli. From mid-on, Pat Cummins threw the ball to wicket-keeper Alex Carey, who dislodged the bails to run Jaiswal out.

The Australians were elated as they got a wicket against the run of play. It was the well-set Jaiswal who had to depart on 82.

Kohli followed Jaiswal to the dressing room soon, edging Boland to Carey and getting out once again while nicking outside the off-stump. He got out for 36 runs.

India sank further in trouble as nightwatchman Akash Deep was dismissed by Boland. At the time of writing, India are 159/5, trailing by 315 more runs.
