IPL 2027 auction is set to take place on December 16, 2026 in Goa.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 auction might see some record-breaking things, as a few major Indian players have reportedly demanded a retention fee of INR 40 crore. It will pose a massive challenge for the IPL franchises.

This is particularly significant given that the mega auction is scheduled for 2028, during which marquee players can demand substantial fees to continue playing for the same franchise. As reported by Cricbuzz, a couple of superstars have demanded INR 40 crore as a retention fee.

The reports indicate that a few players have made their mind and have spoken to their management. It can lead to more superstars demanding hefty amounts in the coming auction.

Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer were the two of the most expensive players in auction history. They bagged the deals of INR 27 crore and INR 26.75 crore by Lucknow Super Giants and Punjab Kings, respectively.

The report from Cricbuzz involves some of the top IPL stars. Though their names have not been revealed yet, the rumors confirm that those players have conveyed their expectations to their franchises.

One of these cases involves a potential captaincy demand also. If it gets done, there are chances that more players will follow the same pattern in the future, believing that they can get a bigger amount if they go into the auction.

That will put the franchises under a lot of pressure to retain such big names with leadership responsibilities and a player’s position within the team. However, no names have been disclosed, and the demanded amount of INR 40 crore can be treated as salary negotiations rather than confirmed.

It happened for the first time when Pant and Iyer were not retained in 2025 and they went into the auction. That was the first time when an IPL bid crossed INR 25 crores. However, the demand of INR 40 crore will be influenced by many factors.

The total purse value of all franchises is the key factor among these. The increased purse value for the 2027 season is INR 130 crore, which is expected to reach INR 150 crore for the 2028 mega auction.

When will the IPL auction 2027 take place?

The IPL 2027 mini-auction is scheduled to take place in Goa on December 16, 2026.
