India played their first game of test cricket in 1932.

Test cricket is the toughest test of a player’s skillset. It’s a game of phases that presents various challenges for the players across multiple days.

Scoring big runs is pivotal in winning test matches. Putting up a huge total on board does multiple things: tire out the opposition, give more time to your bowlers to rest, the pitch deteriorates, and stretch the game further from the opposition.

Throughout their cricketing history, India have regularly piled up huge totals and recorded wins by an innings. India’s strength has been reflected in some of their most emphatic victories, where they have not only won but completely outclassed the opposition by winning matches by an innings margin.

On that note let’s look at the five biggest wins by an innings for India in test cricket.

Here are the top five biggest wins for India in test cricket by an innings margin:

5. Innings and 222 runs vs Sri Lanka, 2022, Mohali

India thumped Sri Lanka by an innings and 222 runs in the Mohali test in 2022. India declared their first innings at 574/8 after Ravindra Jadeja’s spectacular knock of 175*.

The heroics of Jadeja didn’t stop as the all-rounder picked up nine wickets in the game, folding out Sri Lanka for 174 and 178 in their first and second innings respectively.

Jadeja’s all-round performance helped him win the Player of the Match award as India registered a dominating win.

4. Innings and 239 runs vs Sri Lanka, 2017, Nagpur

The second test of Sri Lanka’s tour of India in 2017 saw the Indian team cruise to a comfortable victory by an innings and 239 runs in Nagpur.

In reply to Sri Lanka’s first innings total of 205, the Indian team declared their innings with a massive total of 610/6.

Virat Kohli was the star of the Indian innings with a blistering double hundred that he made at a strike rate of 80. It did not take long for the Indian team to finish the game as they wrapped up the Sri Lankan second innings for a score of just 166. Virat Kohli was named Player of the Match for his decisive knock.

3. Innings and 239 runs vs India, 2007, Mirpur

India registered a massive win against Bangladesh in 2007 at Mirpur. Thanks to a dominating batting display, the Indian cricket team completed a one-sided victory by an innings and 239 runs.

In their marathon first innings, India declared at a score of 610/3. All four Indian top-order batsmen scored a century each.

Bangladesh team failed to put up any fight with the bat getting out for the score of 118 and 253 in both their innings. Zaheer Khan was named Player of the Match for his seven wickets in the game.
