Due to a tragic death, today’s matches have been cancelled.
Following the death of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia on Tuesday morning, December 30, the BCB has canceled both matches of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL 2025-26).
The announcement was made a few hours before the toss in the day’s opening game between the Sylhet Titans and Chattogram Royals at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, and shortly after the news of Zia’s passing.
The second game was supposed to take place on Tuesday between the Rangpur Riders and the Dhaka Capitals. Three matchdays have now been finished in the BPL’s 2025–26 season, which got underway on December 26.
BCB to share revised fixtures at a later date
Zia was the nation’s Prime Minister for two periods, from 1991 to 1996 and from 2001 to 2006. His passing was announced at 6 a.m. local time on Tuesday.
She was the first female Prime Minister of Bangladesh and the spouse of the country’s previous President, Ziaur Rahman. Since 1984, she has served as the leader and chair of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which her husband formed.
“The BCB recalls with gratitude her [Zia’s] constant blessings and good wishes for the progress of cricket in this country. During her tenure as Prime Minister, she provided outstanding support for the development of cricket in Bangladesh, significantly contributing to improvements in cricket infrastructure and the sport’s growth nationwide. Her vision and encouragement helped pave the way for many of the advancements the game enjoys today,” a BCB statement read as per ESPNCricinfo.
The two games—Sylhet Titans vs Chattogram Royals and Dhaka Capitals vs Rangpur Riders—have been rescheduled, and the BCB will announce the new dates for these matches soon.
“In respect of the nation’s mourning and in honor of Begum Khaleda Zia’s legacy, the BCB announces that today’s scheduled Bangladesh Premier League matches have been cancelled and will be rescheduled. Further details on the revised fixtures will be communicated in due course,” the statement further read.
With several breaks between matchdays, the schedule is unlikely to be affected significantly by the postponement.
Moreover, the Dhaka Metropolis Cricket Committee has postponed nine matches of the Dhaka First Division Cricket League that were scheduled to be held from December 30 to January 1.
