WI opener Brandon King ruled out of remainder of ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Kyle Mayers named replacement

Brandon King scored only 86 runs in five knocks in the tournament before being ruled out due to side strain.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) have named all-rounder Kyle Mayers as the replacement for the injured Brandon King, who has been ruled out from the rest of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 due to a side strain.

King suffered a side strain while batting against England on June 19 during their Super 8 fixture. Left-handed opener and medium-pacer Mayers will replace King in the West Indies squad; he is expected to join the squad on Saturday.

Against England, King had started off in a brisk fashion, walloping 23 runs off 12 balls, including a 101-metre six off Reece Topley. But on the 13th ball that he faced, King skipped down the pitch to attack Sam Curran and injured himself.

He received treatment from the physio on the ground but was in too much pain and had to retire hurt. He didn’t take the field during England’s innings. King also travelled to Barbados with the squad for the game against USA as he awaited the MRI scans. But he’s now been ruled out from the remainder of the competition.

The ICC confirmed this in a release: “The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 has approved left-handed batter Kyle Mayers as a replacement for Brandon King in the West Indies squad. Mayers, who has played 37 T20Is, was named as a replacement after King was ruled out due to a side strain. Mayers is expected to join the squad on Saturday.”

King managed just 86 runs in five knocks at a strike rate of 126. His replacement, Mayers, is one of the most destructive T20 openers in the world. He’s been in good form this year: in 11 T20 games in 2024, Mayers has scored 367 runs at a strike rate of 154 and has picked up nine scalps with the ball.

After losing to England, West Indies defeated the USA by nine wickets.
