Brendon McCullum has been facing a lot of criticism after England’s poor returns in Test cricket.
England Cricket Team coach Brendon McCullum is often credited for turning the team into a dominant side in Test cricket. The former New Zealand captain was appointed as England’s Test coach in May 2022 and took over a struggling squad.
A few months later, Ben Stokes replaced Joe Root as the new Test captain, which introduced an era of BazBall. McCullum and Stokes led England to historic success with their aggressive mindset and fearless batting approach in Test cricket.
England won 10 of their next 11 games in Test cricket, including a 3-0 clean sweep against New Zealand and a series victory against South Africa 2-1. In December 2022, McCullum also guided England to a 3-0 victory against Pakistan, becoming the first foreign team to bag a whitewash against the Asian team at their home.
In September 2024, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) gave the responsibility of the white-ball formats to McCullum, alongside the test duties. In January 2025, McCullum was officially named the all-format coach of England. However, he suffered backlash following England’s poor show in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in March.
Last year in August, England failed to win a test series at home against a young Indian squad under Shubman Gill. The campaign ended in a 2-2 draw. In January this year, England faced a humiliating 4-1 defeat in the Ashes 2025-26 in Australia.
Last month, England also lost a three-match test series against New Zealand (2-1) at home, which raised a lot of questions over McCullum’s role.
Brendon McCullum to be sacked as England Cricket Team’s test coach- Reports

In what has been the latest development, as per the journalist Tom Morris, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is all set to take a massive call. As per the reports, the governing body will sack Brendon McCullum as the test coach of the England Cricket Team.
The development comes after England’s poor outing in the test series against New Zealand, which saw a lot of controversies taking place as well. The series also saw Stokes announce his shocking retirement from international cricket.
The reports claim that the ECB will be making a formal announcement soon. However, there are chances that McCullum will continue coaching the team in white-ball cricket. The official decision from the ECB is expected to come on Sunday (July 12) evening.
Notably, during the Ashes 2025-26, a few England players were caught in a controversy for visiting nightclubs and their excessive drinking habits. After England’s dismal show on the tour, the ECB introduced night curfew protocols, which restricted players from going out of the team hotel on match days. It applied to both home and away campaigns.
McCullum recently removed such protocols after England’s 4-0 victory against India in the T20I series. However, England Cricket Team’s drinking culture made a lot of headlines, and Brendon McCullum was criticised for allowing such practices.
