England’s 36-run loss against Australia could prove disastrous for Jos Buttler’s side.
In an unforeseen situation, defending champions England find themselves on the verge of a group-stage exit in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 despite having not even played two completed matches. This is because their game against Scotland, who they were expected to beat, was washed out and then they suffered a defeat to Australia by a significant margin of 36 runs.
Scotland, on the other hand, have done themselves a huge favour with wins over Namibia and Oman. Especially their big victory over Oman has put Scotland in a prime position to progress to the Super Eight stage ahead of England. Against Oman, Scotland gunned down the target of 151 runs in 13.1 overs.
Mitchell Marsh’s Australia won their first three matches and have sealed their place in the next round.
Jos Buttler’s side have one point in two games, with matches against Oman and Namibia to go. Scotland have five points in three matches with a game against Australia to go.
How can England still qualify for the Super 8 stage?
England are still alive in the race to the Super Eight round; they are competing with Scotland in Group B for progression to the next stage. For Buttler’s side to go through, they need to record big wins over Oman and Namibia and hope that Scotland lose to Australia. Then it will come down to net run rates.
England have a poor NRR of -1.8 compared to Scotland’s 2.164. So the Three Lions certainly need victories by huge margins and hope that Australia defeat Scotland.
Assuming that Scotland lose to Australia by 20 runs while chasing 161, then Buttler’s team will have to win their two games by a combined margin of at least 94 runs to go ahead of Scotland on NRR.
There is also an added complication of the weather because if any of these three matches of England and Scotland gets washed out, then the defending champions will be knocked out.
