Jai Moondra won the Player of the Series award in the recent IRE vs IND T20Is.

Ireland pacer Jai Moondra has become the talk of the town in the international cricket fraternity following his bowling heroics against India in the recently concluded T20I series. The left-arm pacer played a crucial role in leading Ireland to their first-ever T20I series victory against India.

His spectacular three-wicket haul in the 2nd T20I helped Ireland win the close-fought match by just one run. It was a must-win game for India to level the series after losing the opening clash by 34 runs.

Shreyas Iyer & Co. failed to chase a 155-run target in the 2nd T20I after Moondra’s incredible spell, which saw him dismiss both Indian openers for golden ducks and captain Shreyas Iyer. He also won the Player of the Match award. Earlier, he claimed two wickets in the opening game.

With a total of five wickets across two matches, Moondra finished as the second-highest wicket-taker and was adjudged the Player of the Series too. Notably, the 29-year-old pacer holds an Indian passport and began his cricket career in Ireland over the last two years.

After bagging a spot in the national team within two years, the left-arm pacer has become a highlight among cricket fans of both Ireland and India.

Interestingly, Moondra holds an Indian passport and has relocated to Ireland for job and professional purposes. With his impressive performances against the mighty Indian Team, many fans feel that he can also showcase a similar performance for India.

By virtue of holding an Indian passport, this left-arm fast bowler is eligible to play for India; however, the process will be challenging. Firstly, let’s understand the ICC rules for players who wish to play for two different countries.

Under ICC Article 2.2.1, a player who has represented one Full Member national team cannot represent another team until a full three-year period has elapsed since their last international appearance. Since Moondra has already played for Ireland in June 2026, he needs to complete this cooling-off period until June 29, 2009.

However, this ICC ruling cannot halt the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from inducting Moondra in the Indian squad. Since he already has an Indian passport, he can start playing domestic cricket after registering with the State Association.

He needs to impress with consistent performances in domestic tournaments like the Ranji Trophy, the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 to progress to the Indian Cricket Team. However, since he is already 29 years old, he will face tough competition for the same.

The second pathway is by playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He can register in the IPL auction (as an Indian player), and if any franchise picks him in their squad, he will be able to play for the side.

If the left-arm pacer comes up with an impeccable show in at least one season, selectors will not be able to overlook him and provide him opportunities in the T20I team. Hence, representing an IPL team will be a faster pathway to break into the Indian team.

Since Jai is a left-arm pacer, he might be in the focus of selectors as India have always been short of efficient left-armers over the years. He has already proven his ability in the IRE vs IND T20I series and grabbed headlines, which will work in his favour if he wishes to represent India in future.
