The Wanindu Hasaranga-led Sri Lanka have failed to win a single match in the tournament so far.

The Sri Lankan cricket team is on the verge of suffering a group-stage exit from the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024. They are placed in Group D with South Africa, Bangladesh, Netherlands and Nepal.

The Wanindu Hasaranga-led side have had a disastrous T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. The 2014 champions have lost two of their first three games in the competition and their third game was washed out, meaning that their path of qualification to the Super Eight round is out of their hands.

Sri Lanka started their campaign with a six-wicket loss to South Africa in New York, where the Lankans were bowled out for only 77 runs. In their next match, they faced rivals Bangladesh and this time the Islanders suffered a two-wicket defeat in a close contest in Dallas.

Hasaranga’s team then faced Nepal in a must-win encounter on June 11 in Florida. However, incessant rain meant this fixture between the two Asian teams was washed out and both sides shared a point each.

Now, Lanka have one point in three matches with a game against the Netherlands left.

Can Sri Lanka still reach the Super 8 round of the T20 World Cup 2024 after washout against Nepal?

Sri Lanka are all but out of the Super Eight race. They only have a very small mathematical chance where they heavily depend on a spate of other results to go their way, including hoping for a washout of the Bangladesh vs Netherlands match.

For Sri Lanka to qualify for the Super 8 round:

  • They need to beat Netherlands
  • The Bangladesh vs Netherlands match in Kingstown gets washed out; if there is a result in this match, then Lanka are knocked out
  • South Africa beat Nepal
  • Nepal beat Bangladesh

If this sequence of events magically comes true, Lanka, Nepal, Netherlands and Bangladesh will all finish with three points and then it will come down to net run rates.

So, effectively, the Lankan side need a miracle of the highest order to progress to the next round.
