Sri Lanka have lost their first two matches but still stand a slim chance of reaching Super 8.
The Wanindu Hasaranga-led Sri Lanka team have had a disappointing start to their ICC T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. They are on the verge of a group-stage exit, though there are not yet eliminated.
The Island nation first lost to South Africa in New York by 6 wickets. Anrich Nortje bounced them out with a four-wicket haul as they got bundled for only 77 runs.
Then, against Bangladesh, they lost a low-scoring game in Dallas. At the Grand Prairie Stadium on Friday night, Sri Lanka posted 124/9 on the board batting first. They made Bangladesh sweat in the chase with regular wickets but Najmul Hossain Shanto’s team managed to get over the line with two wickets in hand and six balls to spare.
Can Sri Lanka still qualify for the Super 8 round after losing to Bangladesh?
Yes, despite losing their first two matches, Sri Lanka can still qualify for the Super 8 round of the T20 World Cup 2024, but their fate is now not entirely in their own hands.
Sri Lanka need to win their next two matches, against Nepal and the Netherlands, by huge margins to boost their net run rate. And they also need to hope that two out of South Africa, Netherlands and Bangladesh lose at least two of their remaining three games, which could allow the Lankans to finish second in the group with four points.
This is a complicated scenario right now for Sri Lanka, who can only look to win their remaining two games with sizeable margins to keep themselves alive in the race for a top-two finish.
