ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Sanjay Manjrekar hails Shubman Gill as "the complete player at the moment" in ODIs

Shubman Gill scored an unbeaten ton against Bangladesh in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

On Thursday, February 20, India defeated Bangladesh by six wickets to kick off their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a win.

Opener Shubman Gill starred for the Men in Blue, top-scoring with an unbeaten 101 off 129 balls which included nine fours and two sixes. Despite India losing three wickets in a space of eight overs in the middle-overs, Gill maintained his calm at one end to see India through the tricky chase.

Gill has been exceptional in ODIs in 2025. The Punjab batsman scored 87, 60, and 112 across three innings in the home ODI series against England.

His brilliant form has earned high praise from former Indian batsman Sanjay Manjrekar.

Speaking on ESPNcricinfo Match Day, Manjrekar praised Gill’s innings, highlighting that he is batting in the perfect position to make a significant impact. He emphasized that Gill is so talented that he can score a century even while playing at just 60% of his potential.

Manjrekar said, “He [Gill] is batting at the right position to make a huge impact. When he gets a hundred, like today, it seems like there is plenty left in the tank. It was like 60% of Shubman Gill is enough to get a hundred like this and he stays till the end.“

Praising Gill’s adaptability across different phases of the game, Manjrekar hailed the Indian opener as a complete player in the ODI format.

He added, “A guy who can get singles at will, can hit a six at will, has got a reasonably good defence for 50-over cricket, he’s the complete player at the moment.“

India will next face arch-rivals Pakistan on February 23 in Dubai. The Indian management will hope Gill continues his excellent form throughout the tournament.
