Chandika Hathurusingha questioned Bangladesh’s own T20 league Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusingha has hit out against Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) T20 league, Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Chandika Hathurusingha has slammed the management of the BPL and called it a ‘Circus’. Bangladesh coach believes that BPL has failed to develop a good T20 structure in the country. The inaugural season of the BPL was held in 2012.
The Bangladesh Premier League has failed top attract a wider audience around the world. The ongoing BPL 2024 season is almost at its business end. The BPL 2024 playoffs will begin on 26th February with Fortune Barishal, Chattogram Challengers, Rangpur Riders, and Comilla Victorians having qualified for the playoffs round. The final will be played on 1st March at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka.
Chandika calls BPL a ‘Circus’
Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusingha informed that he sometimes switch off the TV while watching the BPL. As quoted by ESPNCricinfo, Chandika Hathurusingha said, “We (Bangladesh Cricket Board) don’t have a proper T20 tournament. This sounds very odd. When I am watching the BPL, I sometimes turn off the TV. Some players are not even of the required class.”
Chandika also slammed the players approach of pick and choose the leagues in between BPL. He added, “I have a big issue with current system. The ICC need to step in. There has to be some regulations. A player is playing one tournament and then he is playing another tournament. It is like a circus. Players will talk about opportunities, but that’s not right. People will lose interest. I have lost interest.”
He also suggested a few more changes to bring in the quality in Bangladesh cricket. Chandika Hathurusingha said, “We need to have a tournament where our players can do things like batting in the top three… Bangladesh bowlers bowling in the death, Where will we learn these things otherwise? We have only one tournament.” He also said that BCB should hold a separate tournament before BPL.
