‘Dewald Brevis, the best injury replacement player in IPL?’- Aakash Chopra analyses his performances after brutal 125 against Australia

Dewald Brevis slammed 125* for South Africa in the second T20I recently.
Aakash Chopra, a former player for India, has questioned whether Dewald Brevis has ever been the best injured substitute in the Indian Premier League (IPL) history. During IPL 2025, the young South African player was purchased by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to replace the injured Gurjapneet Singh.
CSK were having a terrible IPL 2025 as their batting unit completely failed with no runs from the top order or the middle order. In order to bring fresh life into their tournament, CSK signed Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brevis as injury replacements.
The duo lit up a new fire in the CSK squad, and their fresh, aggressive batting gave the franchise new hopes for the upcoming IPL 2026 season. Brevis played six games for CSK, scoring 225 runs with two fifties at a strike rate of 180 with 13 fours and 17 sixes.
Brevis has continued his brilliant form for South Africa as well, making his test debut in Zimbabwe and recently hammering the highest T20I score and second-fastest T20I ton for South Africa. He made 125* against Australia in the second T20I in Darwin.
“Dewald Brevis got the entire credit.”- Aakash Chopra on CSK’s IPL 2025 replacement player

In a video posted on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra, the former India opener, expressed his opinion that CSK could have made a significant acquisition by bringing in Brevis as a replacement for injuries.
“Was Gurjapneet’s injury replacement the best replacement in IPL history? Dewald Brevis got the entire credit for stopping Australia’s winning streak. He scored a century. He broke multiple records while scoring the century, and after that, AB de Villiers praised him a lot and said that he was surprised when no one picked him in the auction, and that’s an absolutely legit question,” he said.
The 22-year-old has a lot of potential and might develop into one of the most threatening players, according to Chopra.
“However, now he is part of the Chennai Super Kings. He came because Gurjapneet got injured. He is the new cub who will one day be a lion. He bats, fields incredibly well, and keeps as well. So Dewald Brevis has huge potential. He has also shown that he plays spin well. He is in good form as well and could possibly be the most important injury replacement in the history of the IPL,” Chopra stated.
CSK will most likely retain Dewald Brevis for his price of INR 2.2 Crores as they seek to recover from their last-place finish in the IPL 2025 tournament.
