Sarfaraz Khan made his India test debut in 2024 against England.
Chris Gayle, a former West Indies cricketer, has urged Indian selectors to bring Sarfaraz Khan back to the national test squad. He underlined that Sarfaraz should be given another chance and that weight or fitness should not be an issue.
Sarfaraz steadily accumulated runs in domestic cricket, earning a spot in the Indian test side in 2024. He struck two half-centuries in his first test match against England. He scored his maiden test ton against New Zealand in Bengaluru. However, he was also passed over for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25.
Even after playing in India A’s tour of England, Sarfaraz was not picked for the test series against England, despite his strong start.
Rumors have it that the Mumbai batter has since lost more than 17 kg, shaping his body to become stronger on the field.
“He lost weight”—Chris Gayle says Sarfaraz Khan should be back in the Indian test team

He immediately made an impression at the Buchi Babu event; however, he was unable to continue playing cricket due to a quad injury. In an interview with Shubhankar Mishra for his podcast, Gayle stated that Sarfaraz’s weight was not a reason to keep him off the test team.
“He should be on the Test side. He should be in the Test squad at least, you know. Scored a century against England at home, not in the squad. I saw a post a couple of days ago. He lost weight. The weight wasn’t even; nothing was wrong with his weight or anything. He’s just fine. He was still scoring runs,” Gayle said in a podcast episode with Shubhankar Mishra.
Sarfaraz, who has yet to feature in a match since the New Zealand series, has amassed 4685 first-class runs in 55 matches, averaging 65.98 for 16 centuries.
“The man scored triple centuries in first-class cricket. So, if they’re using that against him, that’s sad, you know. They should never use that against him. That youngster should have been a part of the squad 100%. I mean, India has so much talent, man, but give the man a run,” he added.
