Cricket will make its return to the Olympics in LA28.
Cricket will make its much awaited return to the Olympic games in 2028. It was approved by the International Olympic Association (IOA) in 2023. The sport was part of the Olympics in 1900 in Paris and has not been featured since then. During that time, only two teams, France and Great Britain, participated in the sport. It was contested only between men’s teams, and Great Britain won the gold medal.
Post the 2024 Olympics in Paris, there were talks about cricket being part of the next games in Los Angeles. The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the IOA took necessary efforts to make cricket a part of the next Olympic Games.
Cricket to be a six-team event in both men’s and women’s categories
IOA now has also confirmed that cricket will be a six-team event during the LA2028 Olympics. Hence, both men’s and women’s tournaments will witness a clash between six teams. The sport will be played in the T20I format.
Notably, since only six men’s and women’s teams will be part of the LA2028 Olympics, a narrow competition is expected among top cricket-playing nations. Unlike regular ICC tournaments, there will be gold, silver, and bronze medals for the top three teams. Hence, out of six teams, three teams will get medals.
The qualification process is not decided yet, but in the men’s category, T20 cricket giants like India, Australia, New Zealand, England, South Africa will be on focus. Similarly, women’s teams are also expected to witness tough competition to qualify.
Women’s teams like England Women, Australia Women, India Women, West Indies Women, New Zealand Women, Pakistan Women, and Sri Lanka Women will look forward to make it to the LA2028 Olympics.
