The International Cricket Council (ICC) has brought some changes in playing conditions in the new year.

In a major change in playing conditions in the new year, reportedly the International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to stop checking the caught-behind dismissal during a stumping referral. Now, third umpires’ decision on stumping referral will be solely based on side-on replays. This will negate the fielding team’s advantage of using the stumping referral as DRS for caught-behind.

Australian wicket-keeper Alex Carey used this tactic during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 wisely. The authorities took note of that and brought changes in playing conditions. Carey used the stumping referrals on a few occasions wisely to reflect on the caught-behind dismissal without using any DRS. Now only the side-on cameras will be used.

Few more changes in playing conditions

The new rule change has come into effect from 12th December 2023. The new rule says, “The change confines a stumping review to only check for stumped, therefore preventing the fielding team a free review for other modes of dismissal (i.e, caught behind) without choosing a player review.” Another rule change comes on concussion replacement.

According to the new rule on concussion replacement, “It provides clarity in the regulations to ensure that a replacement player will not be permitted to bowl if the replaced player was suspended from bowling at the time of their concussion.” Now only four minutes will given to the medical team to check on players for treatment during an injury while in action.

In another major change, the third umpire will have a broader scope of checking all kind of no balls. Third umpires will have the authority to check all forms of foot fall. So far, third umpires were alerting the on-field umpires about front-foot no balls and now they will check on side landings of each delivery to avoid any advantage to the bowlers.
