Cricket South Africa had suffered losses in the last three reporting periods.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced that they earned huge profits of R815 million (US$ 45.6 million) for the 2023-24 fiscal year. This comes up after they hosted the Indian cricket team for two tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is in December-January.
The board also earned considerable profits from the SA20 league. The board made profits of R54 million (US$ 3.02 million) from the SA20 league.
These profits for CSA come after losses for the last three reporting periods: 2020-21, 2021-22, and 2022-23, which collectively amounted to R538 million (US$ 30.14 million).
CSA’s profit in the 2023–24 fiscal year was mostly due to the increased revenue derived from the broadcasting rights for the India series and the SA20. The broadcasting rights had 54 percent of the CSA income this time.
The profit was also boosted by hosting the ICC Under-19 Men’s World Cup, which was shifted from Sri Lanka to South Africa. The tournament generated a revenue of R54 million (US$ 3.02 million).
Apart from this, Cricket South Africa’s total ICC disbursements for the 2023-24 period were R566 million (US$ 31.63 million), which is more than the R290 million (US$ 16.2 million) in the previous fiscal year.
CSA’s biggest financial turnaround was the women’s game, which went through professionalisation at the domestic level last season.
The cricket board spent a whopping amount of R32 million on women’s cricket (US$ 1.78 million).
The cost of running professional cricket – the eight-division 1, seven division 2 domestic men’s teams, and six provincial women’s teams – remained CSA’s biggest expense. The cricket board spent out R633 million (US$ 35.3 million) on these costs.
CSA is expected to enjoy another strong financial year in 2024-25
Cricket South Africa is expected to enjoy another good financial year in the 2024–25 period. This is chiefly due to hosting the Indian cricket team for a four-match T20I series later this year.
The revenue from the South Africa vs India T20I series is expected to be R150 million (US$ 8.38 million) per match. This shows how hosting is so important for the boards for their monetary benefit.
