Three cricketers who made their captaincy debut in IPL 2024
The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has three new captains.
The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) got underway on March 22. This edition has seen some big names make their comebacks in the IPL. Meanwhile, this could also be the last season for some of the legendary players who have been part of the league for a long time.
Captaincy plays an important role for any team and MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma are two of the most successful captains in IPL history. However, both captains stepped down from their roles ahead of the start of the season. There have been a number of captaincy changes in the tournament. But, three players have made their captaincy debut in IPL 2024. In this article, we will talk about three players who have made their captaincy debuts in the ongoing tournament.
Here are three cricketers who have made their captaincy debut in IPL 2024
3. Pat Cummins – Sunrisers Hyderabad
The winners of the 2016 edition Sunrisers Hyderabad haven’t made the playoffs in the last three seasons. That is why we have seen a number of captaincy changes by the franchise. A total of four captains have led the team in the last three seasons: David Warner, Kane Williamson, Aiden Markram and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
But now, the franchise has given the responsibility to the Australian captain, who won the World Test Championship and the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in the last year, to lead the team in IPL 2024. Pat Cummins has played in the league, but he made his debut as IPL captain this season. His experience will certainly be a big boost for the team.
2. Shubman Gill – Gujarat Titans
Gujarat Titans made their IPL debut in 2022 and without a doubt, they have been the best team in the last two seasons. They won the title in their maiden season under Hardik Pandya and then made it to the finals in 2023. However, ahead of the IPL 2024 season, Pandya was traded to the Mumbai Indians, which left the franchise to search for a new captain.
GT had the option to promote one of Kane Williamson, David Miller or Rashid Khan. But, they decided to give the role to Shubman Gill and he made his debut against Mumbai with a brilliant win. It will be interesting to see how far he can take this team.
1. Ruturaj Gaikwad – Chennai Super Kings
Chennai Super Kings are the only franchise to have used the least number of captains in the last 16 years. MS Dhoni led the franchise to five titles and overall 10 IPL finals. Apart from him, Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja have also led the Yellow Army in the IPL.
Everyone was waiting to see MSD as a captain once again, but he shocked the world by handing over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad. The 27-year-old has the experience of leading the second-string Indian side at international level, but made his IPL captaincy debut in the tournament’s opener against Royal Challengers Bengaluru with a win.
