Vinesh Phogat was disqualified after being found overweight ahead of the gold medal bout on August 7.

In heartbreaking turn of events, Indian woman wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024 after she was found overweight ahead of her gold medal match in the women’s 50 kg freestyle event on August 7.

In the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024, the 29-year-old Vinesh scripted history after becoming the first Indian woman to reach final of an Olympic wrestling event on Tuesday after she defeated Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzzman in the semi-final of the 50 kg category.

Phogat was slated to face USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt in the gold medal bout, but she was disqualified after being found overweight ahead of the crucial match on Wednesday.

According to the wrestling rules, if an athlete fails the weigh-in on either day of the competition (preliminaries, repêchage, and final rounds), he/she will be disqualified from the tournament.

In Phogat’s case, when she was weighed on the morning of her gold medal match, she weighed 100 grams more than the limit. Hence, she was disqualified and placed in the last rank. This means that she won’t return with any medal despite reaching the final.

The 29-year-old Phogat reached the final after winning three bouts on August 6. The star wrestler started her journey in the tournament by defeating defending Olympic champion Yui Susaki of Japan.

In the quarterfinal, Phogat crushed European champion Oksana Livach of Ukraine. In semis, she got the better of Yusneylis Guzman of Cuba.

However, the announcement of Phogat’s disqualification broke the hearts of Indians, who were left stunned.

The cricketing fraternity took to social media and offered their messages of strength and solidarity to the 29-year-old star wrestler.

Here’s how the cricketing fraternity reacted:
