Cricketing fraternity mourns sad demise of former India batsman Anshuman Gaekwad

Anshuman Gaekwad played 40 Tests for the Indian cricket team.

Former Indian cricketer and head coach Anshuman Gaekwad passed away at the age of 71 on July 31 at the Bhailal Amin General Hospital in Vadodara. The former batsman and coach died after fighting a long battle with blood cancer.

Earlier, Gaekwad was receiving treatment for his blood cancer at the King’s Hospital in London. The 71-year-old was diagnosed with a rare type of blood cancer, known as myelodysplastic syndrome.

The late Indian cricketer was having financial issues with his cancer treatment. After learning about the shortage of funds for treatment his former teammates Ravi Shastri, Sunil Gavaskar, Sandeep Patil, Kapil Dev and others, requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to aid him.

On July 11, the BCCI secretary Jay Shah released Rs 1 crore for Gaekwad’s treatment. After this, the former India head coach was shifted to India, where further treatments continued in Vadodara, where he passed away on July 31, Wednesday.

The late cricketer made his international debut in December 1974. Gaekwad represented the Indian cricket team in 40 tests and he amassed 1985 runs at an average of 30.07. The right-handed batter also notched up two centuries and 10 fifties.

Gaekwad’s career-best knock came against arch-rivals Pakistan, where he scored 201 runs, spending more than 11 hours at the crease.

After announcing his retirement in 1982, Gaekwad stepped into the coaching arena and took charge of the senior men’s cricket team for two years between 1997 and 1999. Gaekwad also had a brief coaching stint with the Kenya men’s cricket team and was also offered a full-time role in 2009 but he rejected the offer due to personal reasons.
