"In internal discussions.." CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan provides massive update on future captain after MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni promised he would return in IPL 2024 after winning the IPL trophy in 2023.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanathan has provided a major update that there are talks about a succession plan within the franchise, particularly concerning the future captaincy after MS Dhoni’s tenure.
In the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024), MS Dhoni will captain the CSK franchise. The Chennai-based franchise will face Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the opening fixture of the cash-rich league on March 22.
In the IPL 2023 edition, MS Dhoni cleared all rumors regarding his retirement and said he would return to play for the CSK franchise for at least another season and that it was a return gift from his side to the fans.
In the 16th season of the prestigious tournament, Dhoni led the Super Kings to their record-equaling fifth IPL crown. However, during the whole tournament the wicket-keeper batter was seen having trouble with his knee. After the IPL 2023 final, Dhoni underwent knee surgery and worked hard on his recovery before getting fit in time for the new season.
The five-time champions CSK will be looking to identify a future captaincy prospect, considering the talks about their skipper’s future in the showpiece event.
There have been internal talks: CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that there have been internal talks within the franchise, but the franchise owner Srinivasan has made it very clear that they will not talk about the leadership role or vice-captain role.
“See, there have been internal talks. But, Mr. Srinivasan has made it very clear. Let’s not talk about captain and vice-captain appointments. Let’s leave it to the coach and the captain to decide. Let them decide and convey the information to me, and then I will convey it to you all. He has said that ‘the captain and the coach will decide and give us a directive, till then let’s all keep quiet’,” CSK CEO Viswanathan told S Badrinath in the latter’s YouTube show.
The former Indian captain Dhoni already arrived in Chennai in the first week of March and has been leading the CSK’s training session at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, which will host the first IPL 2024 fixture between CSK and RCB.
