The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are entering a new phase after several difficult Indian Premier League (IPL) campaigns over the past few seasons. They brought an end to Stephen Fleming’s long association with the franchise. The five-time champions finished 10th in the 2025 season and then moved just two places to finish 8th in the 2026 season, making the search for a new head coach one of the biggest priorities of the franchise.
The CSK, by all means, are a star-studded lineup, with several big names from Indian and international cricket. They also carry a fine blend of youth and experience. CSK’s coaching setup has largely relied on familiarity; they appointed Fleming as the head coach for around sixteen seasons, and other former CSK players like Michael Hussey and Dwayne Bravo occupied specialist roles in the team management.
Several names have subsequently been discussed in recent months as potential successors for the CSK head coach position. Former England skipper Eoin Morgan is also among the potential candidates. Former CSK star Ravichandran Ashwin has also stated that Morgan’s name is strongly in the mix, while former Indian batter Kris Srikkanth backed Michael Hussey for the position.

According to a recent social media video posted by Rohit Juglan, the CSK coaching discussions have made a move, with MS Dhoni entering into possible conversations with Eoin Morgan.
Morgan is one of the most experienced T20I stars of his time, and he also led England to their only ICC ODI World Cup title as a captain in 2019. He has also captained the Kolkata Knight Riders during their IPL 2021 season, where they finished as the runner-up after losing the final to CSK.
However, the report suggested that Eoin Morgan has demanded a whopping INR 20 crore for the CSK head coach role. The claim has added another layer to the speculation around who could take charge of CSK. The reported figure is only a claim with no official confirmation. However, Juglan also reported that CSK are not entertaining the amount at this moment.
Michael Hussey has been the other biggest name linked to the position. Hussey recently turned down the opportunity to become England’s full-time Test batting coach and instead accepted a part-time consultancy role with Cricket Australia. Hence, Hussey is likely to be available for the role of CSK’s head coach, but his appointment appears to face a significant strategic hurdle.
According to Juglan, MS Dhoni and the CSK owners might be looking forward to changing this entire coaching unit as a whole to bring a fresh approach to the table. With Hussey being part of the squad under Fleming for so many years, it doesn’t seem likely that he could induce that change in approach; hence, his appointment is strategically unlikely.
All of these are only speculations until anything is officially confirmed or declared by the CSK franchise; however, the situation leaves them with a major decision to make, as Morgan offers leadership experience and Hussey provides a deep knowledge of the franchise.
