CSK’s star pacer Khaleel Ahmed sustained a quadriceps injury during the match against KKR.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered a massive blow amid their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 campaign. Pacer Khaleel Ahmed sustained a quadriceps injury against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and then was ruled out of the entire campaign.
Since then, CSK have begun evaluating options to fill the void left by injured Khaleel Ahmed, with several bowlers being called up for trials during ongoing training sessions. His absence has created a gap in the bowling unit, particularly due to his role as a left-arm seamer, who is capable of providing early breakthroughs.
The franchise has not finalised a replacement yet and is taking a cautious approach before making an official announcement. Multiple bowlers have been invited to train with the squad, with the management closely monitoring their performances in the nets.
Akash Madhwal emerges as front runner to place Khaleel Ahmed at CSK

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed to Cricbuzz that the team management is currently evaluating a group of bowlers. Among those being assessed is Akash Madhwal, who was recently spotted bowling in the CSK nets.
Madhwal, who has previously represented the Mumbai Indians (MI), brings a different skillset to the table. The right-arm pacer gained recognition in IPL 2023, particularly for his effectiveness at the death. His ability to deliver yorkers under pressure and control scoring in the final overs has made him a dependable option in the shortest format.
Although Madhwal does not possess the same left-arm angle as Khaleel does, his biggest advantage is his ability to perform in high-pressure situations. He has played 17 games in the league and has picked 23 wickets with the best of 5/5.
The franchise’s decision to conduct trials instead of opting for an immediate replacement underlines a measured strategy. With the tournament progressing, a decision is expected soon. For now, Madhwal remains firmly in contention, though CSK continue to keep their options open before confirming Khaleel’s replacement.
