MS Dhoni scored 161 runs in 14 matches in Indian Premier League 2024.

In a significant development, the former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni is likely to be seen playing in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) allows 5-6 retentions ahead of the mega auction, according to reports.

After winning the IPL 2023 title as CSK’s captain, Dhoni underwent knee surgery. Surprisingly, the legendary wicket-keeper batter took a bold decision ahead of the 2024 edition, where he passed on the captaincy baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad.

It was understood that Dhoni stepped down from his leadership responsibility as he was struggling with his knee. During the IPL 2024 season, the 43-year-old was seen not fully fit and was struggling with his knee.

Despite facing knee issues, the wicket-keeper batter went on to play the whole tournament, and it was speculated that the 2024 edition might be the last of Dhoni playing in CSK colors.

After the end of the IPL 2024 season, the 43-year-old didn’t open up on his retirement and kept his fans guessing on his availability for the next edition of the IPL.

If BCCI allows 5-6 retentions, CSK will retain MS Dhoni for the IPL 2025 season

According to a latest report in Cricbuzz, the former Indian captain Dhoni has spoken about his future with N Srinivasan, who is the owner of five-time champions CSK.

The report further added that if the BCCI allows every franchise to retain a minimum of 5-6 players ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, then Chennai will retain Dhoni and he may continue as a player.

The Cricbuzz report further stated that apart from Dhoni, the Chennai-based franchise might also retain a few players, which includes their captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Matheesha Pathirana, and Shivam Dube.

In the IPL 2024 edition, Dhoni played 14 league stage matches and scored 161 runs. Chennai not only failed to defend their title, but also failed to qualify for the playoffs this time around. They finished fifth in the league with seven wins in 14 games.
