Mustafizur Rahman is slated to play for CSK in IPL 2024.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered another injury concern ahead of the IPL 2024 as their newest acquired Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman was stretchered off the field in the ongoing third ODI against Sri Lanka.

The incident happened at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram where the third ODI is being played between the two sides. Mustafizur was having trouble on the pitch; he was gripping his stomach during the 42nd over and even collapsing to the ground after bowling the final ball of that over. Mustafizur had taken two wickets for 39 runs in his nine overs.

In the 48th over, he came back to bat to bowl his final over, but on his first effort, he failed to get past the first ball. After bowling a wide ball in his attempt to ball with a shortened run-up, he gave up and decided he couldn’t play anymore.

In his stead, Soumya Sarkar bowled the over, took Maheesh Theekshana’s wicket, and gave up just five runs. Mustafizur had never played in the series before. He was chosen to replace Tanzim Hasan Sakib, who was hurt.

Mustafizur Rahman’s recent fitness concern is a huge blow to the plans of his Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise the CSK. Rahman was bought by the CSK team in the IPL 2024 auction for his base price of INR 2 crores.

CSK have already lost the services of their New Zealand opener Devon Conway, who suffered a broken thumb recently and has been ruled out for 8 weeks. Not only this but CSK’s Sri Lanka pacer Matheesha Pathirana has also been reportedly ruled out of a few matches of IPL 2024.

Pathirana, whose bowling action is similar to Lasith Malinga and who did extremely well in the IPL 2023 win of CSK, suffered a hamstring injury during the Bangladesh T20Is and has been advised to rest for a few weeks.

In his absence, CSK would depend on Mustafizur Rahman to come good in death overs. But with Rahman himself struggling with fitness, MS Dhoni will have to alter his plans a lot more.
