The England vs India five-match test series will begin on June 20.
With Shubman Gill as their new captain, Indian Cricket Team are preparing for a five-match test series against England that begins in Leeds on June 20. Gill was named captain last month after veteran players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from test cricket. Rishabh Pant will be Gill’s deputy.
Gill, who recently made an impression with his leadership in the Indian Premier League (IPL), will be playing his maiden test as captain. At the moment, Gill and his team are engaged in an intra-squad game behind closed doors.
Reflecting on what would be his leadership approach in the test series against England, Gill said, “Apart from all the silverware and trophies aside, I would ideally like to build a culture where everyone is very secure and happy. I know it can be a very difficult environment, especially with all the competition or the number of matches that we play and different squads coming in, but if I am able to do that, that would be my goal.”
This test series will also mark the start of India’s new ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle.
An important new chapter for Team India will begin with the forthcoming India tour of England, as a new team gets ready to face one of cricket’s most difficult tasks under English conditions. India have only won a test series in England three times in the last century, making their success in test series on English soil historically uncommon.
These historic wins in 1971, 1986, and 2007 were all led by new or first-time captains, Rahul Dravid in 2007, Kapil Dev in 1986, and Ajit Wadekar in 1971. This underscores the critical role that new leadership had in these momentous victories.
“3-2 in favour of England”- Dale Steyn predicts India will lose the series
Former South Africa cricketer Dale Steyn has shared his thoughts on the new look India team and predicted that they will lose the series to England, but give a tough fight.
Although Steyn predicted that the series would be hotly contested, he backed England to win 3-2 ahead of the first test in Headingley.
“All games will be close. But all will have a result. I think it will be 3-2 in favour of England. There will be a result in every Test match. There will be no run away win for any team, all five games will be very close,” Steyn said on JioHotstar.
India’s Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.
