"We should take inspiration from New Zealand"- Daren Sammy issues warning to India ahead of test series

West Indies, coached by Daren Sammy, will play two tests against India in Ahmedabad and Delhi.

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy wants to take a cue from New Zealand, who thrashed the India 3-0 last year, as they prepare for a difficult tour of India.

The former skipper of West Indies Daren Sammy, who has won the T20 World Cup twice, has urged the team to get ready with the hope that they can defeat India in India.

The West Indies have lost seven of the nine test matches played in India since winning the third test during the 1994 trip in Mohali. At the Wankhede Stadium in 2011, scores were tied in the second innings of a test match that concluded in a draw.

India will undoubtedly start as the favourites given the odds, and Sammy used New Zealand as an example.

“We’re definitely going down there with the mindset to win. We’re not just going to go down there and think, ‘Oh, it’s India.’ No. New Zealand went there and did incredibly well, and we should take inspiration from that. But again, it’s understanding the things that New Zealand did in those conditions and trying to emulate them with our guys as well,” Sammy said, as per the Indian Express.

The West Indies team will fly down to India after the Carribean Premier League (CPL) 2025 concludes. The first test of the series will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 2. The second test will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi from October 10 onwards.

According to Daren Sammy, it would be crucial to prepare for Indian conditions. They don’t play any practice games before the test series, like the majority of visiting teams.

“From my end, the ten days leading up to the [first] Test match [in India], we’ll be drilling in all these things and planning very well as to how we’re going to beat India in India,” Sammy added.

They have lost five test matches by an innings and one by a margin of 10 wickets, and aside from the Eden Gardens Test in 2002, they have failed to put India to the test in any of the other eight matches.
