David Wiese played international cricket for South Africa and Namibia.

Following Namibia’s end of the road in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024, all-rounder David Wiese confirmed his retirement from international cricket.

Wiese’s last international outing came against England on Saturday in Antigua, where he whacked 27 runs off 12 balls with two fours and two sixes. In a 10-over-per-side, he was promoted to number 3 as Namibia attempted to chase the target of 123. Eventually, they fell 41 runs short of England’s total.

As he was walking back to the dressing room, Wiese raised his bat and helmet to the crowd and was greeted by the Namibia players, led by skipper Gerhard Erasmus, near the boundary line. This was an indication that the all-rounder had told his teammates about his decision to retire.

It just seemed like the right time: David Wiese on international retirement

He confirmed it later in the press conference. Wiese said, “I mean, [the next] T20 World Cup is still two years away, I’m 39 years old now, so , in terms of international cricket, I don’t know if there’s much left in me.”

“Obviously, I [would] still like to play the game for a couple more years, I feel like I’ve still got a lot to contribute and a lot to play. But I just feel like what better place to end a special career for me personally with Namibia. I’ve had a lot of good times with them and to play my last game for them possibly at a World Cup against a world-class team like England, it just seemed like the right time.”

The 39-year-old who was born in South Africa and played for the Proteas years ago featured in three consecutive T20 World Cups for Namibia. He left South African cricket in 2016 and took the Kolpak deal.

He made his debut for Namibia in the 2021 T20 World Cup, where he helped them get to the Super 12 stage. In this tournament, he starred in their only win, against Oman, in the Super Over.

David Wiese featured in 34 T20Is and nine ODIs for Namibia. Overall, he played 54 T20Is and 15 ODIs in his career for South Africa and Namibia.
