DC captain David Warner fined for breach of code of conduct after SRH match in IPL 2023
This was David Warner-led DC's second straight win after 5 losses on a trot in IPL 2023.
Delhi Capitals captain David Warner has been fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during their IPL 2023 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on April 24, 2023.
This was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences.
"Delhi Capitals captain David Warner has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad. As it was his team’s first offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, David Warner was fined Rs. 12 lakhs," IPL said in a release.
The IPL aims for matches to finish in three hours and 20 minutes, but slow overrate is proving to be an issue, with several games stretching past the four-hour mark.
Delhi Capitals defeat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 7 runs in IPL 2023
However, this fine would mean very little to the Delhi Capitals captain David Warner, who was playing in Hyderabad for the first time since 2019, when he was captain of the SRH franchise. However, things turned downwards for the Australian as a poor form in IPL 2020 led to him being benched next year mid-way into the tournament in IPL 2021.
SRH also replaced him with Kane Williamson as captain and when the tournament was shifted to UAE in the second half, he only played 2 matches, before carrying drinks for the remainder of the season.
Meanwhile, DC registered a brilliant 7-run win over SRH as they managed to defend 144 runs which they made thanks to 34 runs each from Manish Pandey and Akshar Patel on a tough pitch to bat on. All-rounder Washington Sundar (4-0-28-3) and pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar (4-0-11-2) shone with the ball.
In reply, SRH's batting never got going in the chase despite a late burst from Washington Sundar (24*) and a good start of 49 from Mayank Agarwal. SRH only made 137/6 in 20 overs and lost by 7 runs with Axar Patel and Anrich Nortje taking 2 wickets each.
It was DC's second win on the trot after losing five straight games in this year's IPL. They still are languishing at the bottom of the points table but back-to-back wins have not only given them new lease of life but have also kept them well and truly in the hunt for the playoffs.
