Deepti Sharma picked a five-wicket haul in the IND-W vs PAK-W match.

India clashed with Pakistan in their tournament opener of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. The match took place at Edgbaston in Birmingham, on June 14, Sunday.

Indian skipper, Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and elected to bat first. The pitch looked hard and was expected to get slower in the second innings. India went with three spinners and two medium pacers.

The Women in Blue posted 170 on the board for Pakistan to chase in 20 overs. Smriti Mandhana shone with her gritty fifty scoring 68 off 44, and contributions from Kaur (36) and Richa Ghosh (34 off 17) helped India significantly.

As India went on with their second innings, one of India’s most experienced spinner Deepti Sharma determined the game with her brilliance with the ball.

Deepti has played 275 international matches, which includes a 145 T20Is, 124 ODIs and 6 Test matches, representing India. With her exceptional bowling, she has become the first spinner ever to pick more than 350 wickets in Women’s international cricket.

She also became the highest wicket-taker in Women’s T20 internationals with 166 wickets to her name (as on June 14, 2026). She has taken more than 160 wickets in ODIs and T20Is each.

Deepti was also amongst the highest wicket-takers of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 with 22 wickets to her name, including a five-wicket haul in the final; making her the Player of the Tournament.

Not just her brilliance with the ball, but her golden arm in the field has also been pivotal for India, as she run out an important Pakistan batter in today’s game. When India were finding it tough to pick wickets, she was the one who got the first breakthrough.

The right-arm spinner has been crucial for India in the ICC tournaments, and has always come through well for the team. This is her fourth T20 World Cup, and India will look to go for their maiden T20I title this year. India won their first match of the T20 World Cup 2026 by 64 runs against Pakistan.
