After 5 consecutive losses in IPL 2023, Delhi Capitals franchise to take a call on coaching staff - Reports
Delhi Capitals to next face Punjab Kings in IPL 2023 encounter on Thursday, April 20.
If reports are to be believed, then Delhi Capitals (DC) franchise has made up their mind to part ways with their coaching staff including Ricky Ponting, especially after the disastrous outing in the ongoing IPL 2023, where the side has lost its first five games thus far.
Having done so, DC stares at an early exit in IPL 2023. If they lose to Punjab Kings on Thursday (April 20), they will be the first team to be out of playoff contention with half a dozen defeats. And now as per a PTI report, the Delhi management has understood that the aim for this season is to salvage pride and finish on a respectable note, instead of aiming for the playoffs spot.
The biggest reason for Delhi's apathetic performance in IPL 2023 has been their batting. Excluding Warner, no batter in the side bailed the team out of awkward situations, except Axar Patel and Manish Pandey - who slammed half-centuries in one game each - but the team failed to cross the winning line.
Delhi Capitals Will Certainly Not Have This Jumbo Coaching Staff Next Season: Reports
Following the team's dismal show questions are also being raised about the competence of the support staff of Delhi Capitals and it is being reported that the franchise might let go of a few coaching staff after IPL 2023.
A decision on head coach Ricky Ponting will also be taken at the end of the season. Meanwhile, David Warner, who was named captain for the IPL 2023 due to Rishabh Pant being out with injuries, is to remain captain of the side for the rest of the IPL 2023, unless he himself wants to concentrate on batting alone.
However, same cannot be said for the huge support staff at the DC franchise which comprise of Sourav Ganguly as Director of Cricket, Ponting (head coach), James Hopes (assistant coach), Ajit Agarkar (assistant coach), Shane Watson (assistant coach), Pravin Amre (assistant coach), Biju George (assistant coach).
"Obviously, nothing will happen mid-season but the poor result for two successive seasons will have its share of repercussions when JSW and GMR, the two co-owners sit back and take stock of the season. So you will certainly not have this jumbo coaching staff next season for sure. There will be a few heads that might roll," a source told PTI.
It was also reported that Sarfaraz Khan might be asked to open in place of Prithvi Shaw. The right hander from Mumbai, has been in terrible form with the bat with scores of 12,7,0,15 and 0 thus far.
