BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia provides update on new president after Roger Binny's exit

Rajiv Shukla has been appointed as interim president of the BCCI after Roger Binny’s departure.
Since the exit of Roger Binny as the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) president, the board is in search of a new candidate. Binny, who turned 70 in July, stepped down from the role. According to the BCCI’s constitution, a BCCI administrator will have to step down once they have completed 70 years.
Hence, Binny vacated the role, which is open to grab. The BCCI then appointed the vice-president Rajiv Shukla, as the interim president of the board. Binny was elected as the 36th BCCI president in October 2022 and has completed his tenure.
The BCCI secretary, Devajit Saikia, has cleared the uncertainty on the BCCI president’s role after Binny’s exit. Saikia stated that the board will reveal its itinerary in the coming days. The BCCI is set to hold an Annual General Meeting (AGM) in the last week of September.

The BCCI is likely to host the next AGM meeting on September 28, and the next candidate for the BCCI presidential role will be discussed during it. Some reports confirm that a legendary Indian cricketer is expected to get a nod ahead.
In an interview with ANI, Saikia said, “Very soon, there will be a notice coming out regarding the next course of action. And also, the AGM is due before September 30. BCCI is going to follow its constitution, which is in place. According to the constitution, we have to conduct our AGM before the end of September every year. So this year also, there will be no deviation. We’ll have our AGM before September 30. And the notice regarding the exact date, time, and venue will be issued in a day or two.”
Earlier there were some media reports stating that the BCCI would appoint Shukla as the next full-time president during the AGM meeting. However, the interim president dismissed all such claims, calling them “useless talk.” He said, “These are useless talks. When one spot is about to get vacant, the person next in line gets the interim charge before the election. It is a procedural thing.”
India won two ICC titles under the supervision of Binny. They lifted the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Under him, the BCCI also launched the Women’s Premier League (WPL), which became a global hit in women’s cricket.
