Southpaw’s dismissal shocked fans.

On Monday, at Lincoln’s Bert Sutcliffe Oval, Devdutt Padikkal was dismissed just one run short of a double century, sparking debate over whether he was actually out. India A needed him when he got out.

They had been bowled out for 113 in the first innings of the 1st unofficial Test against New Zealand A, who made 317 and led by 204. The start of the second innings was also poor. Within five overs, Yashasvi Jaiswal was caught out off a bouncer, and KL Rahul was bowled, leaving India A at 10 for 2.

Padikkal began Day 3 on 56, with Sai Sudharsan on 39. The two left-handers handled strong winds and punished loose deliveries, putting together a 215-run stand before Sudharsan top-edged a short ball for 91.

Padikkal brought up his 12th first-class hundred with a six off Jayden Lennox, then added 142 runs in 142 balls with Yash Rathod, who scored 66 before falling after tea. Sudharsan played the steadier part, giving Padikkal room to attack. By then the deficit had been wiped out, and India A were ahead.

Then came the moment people are still talking about. Zak Gibson sent down a leg-side delivery, Padikkal tried to clip it and missed, and wicketkeeper Mitchell Hay gathered it. New Zealand A appealed.

The umpire’s finger went up, and Padikkal did not move. He looked shocked and stayed on the pitch for a few moments, staring at the umpire in disbelief. He then used his hands to show how far the ball had passed from his bat. In his view, the ball had gone towards the leg side and had only brushed his pads.

The doubt came from the sound. Reports say there was a noise as the ball went past, but Padikkal seemed convinced it had not come off his bat. The appeal from New Zealand A also did not look especially strong, which made the decision harder to accept.

His 199 came off 248 balls and included 24 fours and three sixes. India A did not stall. Washington Sundar finished unbeaten on 51, and the visitors closed Day 3 at 488 for 8, a lead of 284 with one day to play.

Padikkal entered India’s Test side only because Sudharsan was injured during the Sri Lanka series, and he made centuries in both Tests he played. He also hit a hundred in the tour game before that series. Sudharsan’s 91 shows he is still in the contest, so the No. 3 spot is far from settled.
