Dewald Brevis scripts history, becomes the most expensive player in SA20 history

Dewald Brevis was picked by Pretoria Capitals for Rs. 8.31 crore during SA20 2026 auction.

South Africa batter Dewald Brevis scripted history as he became the most expensive player in the history of the SA20 league. The right-handed batsman was acquired by Pretoria Capitals for a record amount of Rs. 8.31 crore (Rand 16.5 million) during the SA20 2026 auction, which is underway in Johannesburg on September 9 (Tuesday).

The Johannesburg Super Kings, the Paarl Royals and MI Cape Town were involved in a bidding war for Brevis at the start before Pretoria Capitals joined the race later and placed the winning bid to capture the youngster in their squad. Brevis was part of MI Cape Town in the last season.

Notably, South Africa T20I skipper Aiden Markram became the first player to breach 10 million Rand in the SA20 2026 auction, signed by Durban Super Giants for Rand 14 million (Rs. 7.05 crores). However, Brevis broke his record a few minutes later.

Dewald Brevis slammed a T20I century last month

Notably, Brevis’ high demand in the SA20 2026 auction was due to his heroics in the T20I series against Australia last month. The 22-year-old slammed an unbeaten century against Australia, smacking his first ton in the shortest format. In 10 T20Is for South Africa so far, Brevis has slammed 318 runs at a stunning strike rate of 191.57 and batting average of 39.75.

Last season, Brevis was part of MI Cape Town and smacked 291 runs in 12 games at an average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 184.18. He was the sixth highest run-scorer in the tournament. MI Cape Town also won the trophy in the tournament.

Meanwhile, SA20 2026 will be played from December 26, 2025, to January 25, 2026.
