Dhruv Jurel earned his maiden T20I call-up for the five-match series against Zimbabwe.

Young wicket-keeper batter Dhruv Jurel, who earned his maiden T20I call-up to the national side for Zimbabwe tour, has opened up on how he was feeling when India took on South Africa in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final. India eventually won the game by seven runs to lift the T20 World Cup after 17 years.

After winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, the focus now shifts on India’s next assignment, which is a five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. All of the players who were part of the T20 World Cup-winning squad are not part of the first two T20Is against Zimbabwe. Only three out of the 15 will join the camp in Harare for the last three matches.

The BCCI selection committee named a young squad for the tour to be captained by youngster Shubman Gill. The series will kickoff at the Harare Sports Club in Harare on July 6 and will conclude on July 14.

Meanwhile, members of the current squad watched other Indian stars perform and lift the T20 World Cup trophy last week in Barbados.

Ahead of the first T20I against Zimbabwe, Indian players were asked to share how they watched the T20 World Cup 2024 final and how they celebrated it. One of the openers in the current squad Abhishek Sharma revealed that he watched the game alongside Indian legend Yuvraj Singh. Other members like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Tushar Deshpande and Dhruv Jurel also shared their stories.

I cheered for South Africa to help India win the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final: Dhruv Jurel

It was an emotional night for the fans as the Rohit Sharma-led India lifted the T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating South Africa in the final by seven runs in Barbados on June 29.

However, at one point of time, it was looking like Proteas will win the match with 30 runs to win in run-a-ball situation. However, Indian pace trio of Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh bowled their hearts out in the last five overs of the chase and helped Men in Blue win the thrilling clash.

Reacting to India’s heroics, wicket-keeper batter Jurel expressed that he was cheering for India at first, but the match got into the wire. Right then, he started cheering for South Africa to win, trying to reverse-jinx the game, and it worked perfectly for him. Jurel further added that he celebrated it like a kid when India later pulled off the win.

“I was saying that India should win but South Africa was winning at that point, then I suddenly started cheering and supporting for South Africa, but things changed as India started winning the game. Then I started repeatedly saying South Africa should win, but at the end India won, and I was celebrating like a kid,” Dhruv Jurel said.
