Marnus Labuschagne was snubbed from the Australian ODI squad for the South Africa tour.
Australia are preparing for a challenging tour to South Africa, which also includes three Test matches. The series holds immense significance, as it is part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle.
The opening Test will be played in Durban from October 9 to 13, followed by the second Test in Gqeberha from October 18 to 22 and the third in Cape Town from October 27 to 31. This will mark Australia’s historic return to South Africa for the first time since that infamous 2018 series.
The series is crucial for both teams, as they are both currently looking to hold on to their spots to qualify for the WTC final. However, with Australian batters having struggled in recent times in the longest format of the game, this series will hold massive significance. Marnus Labuschagne’s position has consequently become one of the biggest talking points ahead of the tour.
Marnus Labuschagne is often regarded as one of the finest Test batters of his generation, but his dip in form has been eye-catching. He managed only 36 runs in the Bangladesh home series. Australia recently dropped him from the white-ball squad, but the selectors have chosen to retain him for the longer format of the game.

On paper, there is a strong argument that Australia’s decision is a massive gamble. Labuschagne’s last triple-figure Test score came back in 2023 during the Ashes series, and since then it has been over two years that the batter has been performing considerably below his standards.
In recent times, he has been noted for losing his shape more often, not being able to handle pressure wisely and struggling with his temperament and ability to spend an enormous amount of time on the pitch. Despite all, Australian selectors have reasons for backing him.
Since establishing himself as Australia’s No. 3 in Tests, Labuschagne has been remarkably consistent in the position, and Australia will need his experience in South Africa. The chief selector George Bailey has also left several possibilities open. He argued that a place in the squad does not guarantee a spot in the XI for Labuschagne.
He suggested that the veteran batters might be dropped from the playing XI for the first Test at Durban. Also, he suggested a change in the batting order, with Steve Smith moving to a potential No. 3 position.
The inclusion of Australian youngster Cooper Connolly left another possibility open. The left-handed batter averages 43 in first-class cricket and is well suited for that no. 3 position. However, he is relatively inexperienced at Test level.
Ultimately, retaining Labuschagne is not necessarily a mistake, but it is a decision which will put the Australian team management under considerable pressure. South Africa’s Test series will be a major test for the Australian veteran.
