IPL 2026: Did CSK make mistake by trading Ravindra Jadeja to RR?

Ravindra Jadeja played for CSK from 2011-2015 and then from 2018-2025.

Ravindra Jadeja was a hot topic ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction as he was traded to the Rajasthan Royals (RR) by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). After starting his IPL career with the RR and winning the IPL 2008 under Shane Warne’s tutelage, Jadeja joined the CSK franchise in IPL 2011.

He had a brief stint with Kochi Tuskers Kerala before his CSK stint began, and Jadeja formed a deadly spin combo with Ravichandran Ashwin. Jadeja then spent two seasons with the Gujarat Lions when CSK was banned for two years.

But he rejoined the franchise in IPL 2018, winning the title two more times in 2021 and 2023. He had a failed stint as CSK captain in IPL 2022, and in years after that, it was heavily rumoured that Jadeja might bid goodbye to the yellow army.

The rumours came true when CSK traded in Sanju Samson from RR, and RR got Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran from CSK ahead of IPL 2026

Did CSK make an error by trading Ravindra Jadeja to RR?

Ever since the IPL 2026 schedule was announced by the BCCI, all eyes were on the RR vs CSK match in Guwahati’s Barsapara Cricket Stadium on March 30, 2026. It would see Jadeja take the field against his former franchise for his first franchise.

Riyan Parag won the toss and chose to field first, and CSK’s batting collapsed badly. Openers Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad fell for 6 runs each, and they were 38/4 before Sarfaraz Khan (17) and Kartik Sharma (18) stemmed the fall of wickets. Then Jamie Overton saved CSK from major blushes with 43 runs with 2 fours and 2 sixes to take them to 127.

Jadeja starred with 2/18 in 3 overs, and now everyone is thinking whether the CSK erred by trading him to the Rajasthan Royals. Jadeja dismissed the dangerous Sarfaraz Khan and Shivam Dube to put brakes on CSK’s scoring.

By doing so, CSK lost one of the best white-ball spinners in Jadeja and someone who would’ve done well with the bat if he were in yellow and CSK were in a similar situation. Jadeja would’ve been perfect to pull CSK out of such trouble and give Overton some more support.

But with CSK already deciding to punt on youngsters and having traded Jadeja to RR, it remains to be seen whether it turns out to be a good one or one they regret.
