Did India make a mistake by sacking Suryakumar Yadav & appointing Shreyas Iyer as T20I captain?

Shreyas Iyer replaced Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain in June.
Even after leading the Indian Cricket Team to the title in the T20 World Cup 2026 in March, Suryakumar Yadav was sacked as the captain, which came as a surprise for many. Not only this, he was also dropped from the team due to his poor batting form in the shortest format over the last one year.
The year 2026 started well for Yadav as he impressed with his fabulous performance in the T20I series against New Zealand. Slamming three fifties across five games, he led the team to a 4-1 victory in the five-match series.
However, Suryakumar could not replicate his batting heroics in the T20 World Cup, where he managed just one unbeaten fifty in the opening game against the USA. Although India lost just one game against South Africa in the campaign and dominated other teams under Yadav’s captaincy, he could not come up with impressive batting shows.
Later, Yadav struggled to perform for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 from March to May. Due to his declining form and age factor, the governing body eventually sacked him as captain and allotted the reins of the side to Shreyas Iyer.
Although Iyer was sidelined from the shortest format for the last two years, he was brought back into the T20I team due to his impressive batting form and leadership skills in the IPL since 2024.
In IPL 2024, Shreyas led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the title. In the 2025 edition, he propelled Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the playoffs and final after a gap of 10 seasons. Punjab also registered a winning streak at the start of IPL 2026 before witnessing consecutive defeats in the second half and losing playoffs spot.
Iyer had a successful stint as captain in the IPL over the last few seasons; however, he could not replicate similar results for the Indian Team. In his first two assignments in Ireland and England, India suffered disastrous whitewashes that shocked the entire cricket fraternity.
Shreyas has also received a lot of criticism by fans and experts after India’s dismal performances. Some fans have also slammed BCCI for sacking Suryakumar Yadav from the T20I team.
Was BCCI’s decision to replace Suryakumar Yadav with Shreyas Iyer as T20I captain wrong?

When Shreyas replaced Suryakumar as the T20I captain, it brought mixed reactions from fans. While numerous fans supported the decision, many found it unjustified.
However, after Iyer could not lead India to any victories across his first seven T20I games, it looks like the BCCI took a hasty step. Since Iyer also won the toss in all of his seven games, he does not have any points in his favour for such back-to-back defeats.
Moreover, BCCI should have retained Suryakumar in the squad despite sacking him as captain, as he improved his form in the shortest form since the start of 2026. If he was part of the squad against Ireland and England, he would have helped Shreyas with his leadership tactics.
With such a step, the transition would have been smoother and Iyer would’ve benefitted from Yadav’s guidance in both campaigns.
Even though Suryakumar’s batting form witnessed a roller-coaster ride since the start of his captaincy in July 2024, he made sure that India dominated in each campaign and against every country they played.
Suryakumar Yadav & Co. won all bilateral T20I series from July 2024 till March, including victories in the Asia Cup 2025 and T20 World Cup 2026. Also, the Men in Blue had more than 80% victory margin under Yadav.
