Dodda Ganesh will replace Lameck Onyango as Kenya’s cricket team head coach.

Former India pacer Dodda Ganesh was named the head coach of the Kenya cricket team on August 13, 2024. Dodda Ganesh played four tests and one ODI for India in 1997 and took six wickets in total. Dodda Ganesh boasts of an excellent record in Indian domestic cricket with 365 First Class (FC) wickets in 104 matches and 128 wickets in 89 List A games.

The announcement was made on August 13, when Ganesh was seen sharing greetings with Kenya cricket officials at the Sikh Union Club. He boasted vast coaching expertise and stated that he was privileged to become the Kenya team’s head coach.

“Privileged to be named the head coach of the Kenya cricket team,” Ganesh posted on X.

In his first few tasks as head coach, Kenya will face Papua New Guinea, Qatar, Denmark, and Jersey in the ICC Division 2 Challenge League in September, followed by the T20 World Cup Africa Qualifiers in October.

Dodda Ganesh says his primary aim is for Kenya to qualify for the 2027 World Cup

Ganesh replaced Lameck Onyango at the helm but will be supported by Onyango, Joseph Angara, and Joseph Asichi on the coaching front.

“My first vision is to qualify for the World Cup. I’ve seen the dedication and hard work among the players. I’m not interested in the past, but I firmly believe that Kenyans possess the spirit of champions. I’ve been watching Kenyan cricket matches on YouTube, and I’m impressed with the talent I see. It’s evident that the players are in good shape,” Ganesh was quoted by India today.

Kenya were part of five consecutive World Cups from 1996 to 2011 and had even qualified for the semi-finals of the 2003 ODI World Cup. Kenya has competed in the inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup, as well as three Champions Trophy tournaments between 2000 and 2004.

They did not qualify for the 2014 Cricket World Cup Qualifier and finished below the top four, hence they lost their ODI status.
