The three-match ODI series between India and West Indies is currently underway. The Indian T20I side is currently engaged in the ongoing Asian Games 2026 in Japan.
That has created opportunities for some players to feature in the IND vs WI ODIs for some young players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Naman Dhir, and Aquib Nabi.
It is an excellent opportunity for these youngsters to grab their chances and impress the selectors. Ravindra Jadeja was also among those players who were called back to the ODI squad for the series.
Notably, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar are not available due to commitments with the Asian Games 2026. That made the Indian selection committee pick Jadeja, who has vast experience in this format.
The IND vs WI ODIs will be a key series for Jadeja, as he is fighting for his position in the ODI setup. The all-rounder has been India’s main spinner in tests, and after retiring from T20Is, he is only a regular feature in longest format of the game. He has been in and out of ODI side, and thus IND vs WI seires comes as an perfect opportunity for him to reclaim his place back.

Jadeja made his ODI debut for India in 2009 and has been active since then. He has played 212 games and is only the third Indian spinner after Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh to have more than 200 wickets.
His ability with the bat and in the field, along with his bowling, is an asset to any team. For India, he has won many games on his own. But does he really deserve a chance in the current ODI team?
Jadeja is currently 37 years old, and he won’t be getting younger now. But despite his age, he is still one of the quickest players in the team. But his wicket-taking ability has taken a steep dip in the last couple of years.
Once regarded as India’s premier weapon with the ball, Jadeja has taken only three wickets in the last 8 completed ODIs since the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. His premier role in the team is to take wickets in the middle overs, and he has failed to do it consistently.
That is where the question of his inclusion in the ODIs arrives. India have the options of Axar Patel and Washington Sundar, who also bring almost similar skill sets to the table.
Axar and Sundar have also shown good form in the white-ball setup in recent times. That is why, as per the current form, India should go with other possible options, as there are not many matches left ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
