4 EMBARRASSING records India achieved after defeat in first IRE vs IND T20I

Ireland scripts history as they defeated India in first T20I by 34 runs.

India’s tour of Ireland got off to a disappointing start after the T20 World Cup champions had an unexpected defeat in the opening match of the two-game series. The series marked the beginning of a new chapter for India’s T20I team under newly appointed captain Shreyas Iyer.

Shreyas Iyer‘s side were clear favourites but failed to deliver a balanced performance against Ireland in Belfast. Despite the defeat, India still have a chance to level the series in the second and Final T20I game.

Ireland gave a brilliant all-round performance to register a 34-run victory over India on June 26, 2026, in Belfast. Ireland made 182/9 and bowled India out for 148 in 18.5 overs, and with this, they registered their first-ever international T20I win over the Men in Blue.

Apart from the result, India registered some of the unwanted records. From Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy debut to Prasidh Krishan’s expensive spell, we take a look at them:

4 Embarrassing Records India set during their 34-run loss to Ireland

1.  Shreyas Iyer becomes the first Indian captain to lose against Ireland

The defeat was a historic one for Ireland as it marked their first-ever international victory over India across all formats. Before this match, India had maintained a perfect record against Ireland, winning all 8 T20Is and 3 ODIs played between the two teams.

However, Shreyas Iyer became the first Indian captain to lose an international game against Ireland. It was definitely an unwanted record for him on his first appearance as India’s full-time T20I captain.

2. Lowest score by an Indian on T20I captaincy debut

Apart from Captaincy, Shreyas Iyer also had a bad day with the bat as he was able to score only 3 runs off 7 balls. Returning to India’s T20I setup after more than two years, it was a forgettable day for him.

With that Knock, he registered the lowest score by an Indian batter on a T20I captaincy debut. The previous lowest score by an Indian captain (Rohit Sharma) on a T20I debut was 17 runs.

3. Prasidh Krishna records the most expensive over by an Indian against Ireland in T20Is

Prasidh Krishna had an excellent performance in the final ODI against Afghanistan as he picked 5 wickets. But his Ireland outing was a completely different story. Prasidh Krishna conceded 57 runs from his four overs without taking a wicket, and his last over cost India 27 runs, making it the most expensive over bowled by an Indian against Ireland in T20I cricket.

4. First team to lose twice in their immediate match after winning the T20 World Cup.

India also became the first team in men’s T20I history to lose their first match immediately after winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

After lifting the T20 World Cup 2024, India had lost their first T20I game against Zimbabwe in Harare. Now, India suffered another defeat in their first T20I against Ireland after winning the T20 World Cup 2026.

However, despite the opening match defeat, India still have the opportunity to bounce back in the second T20I. Abhishek Sharma scored a fiery half-century while Harshit Rana’s three-wicket haul was among the positives from the first game.

Indian team management will be looking for some serious changes for the second T20I in Belfast. It will be interesting to see India’s Playing XI in the second T20I and how they are going to approach the game.

Why was India’s defeat against Ireland historic?

It was Ireland’s first-ever international victory over India across all formats.

When will India play the second T20I against Ireland?

Indian will face Ireland in the second and final T20I on June 28, 2026 in Belfast.
