Shubman Gill made 269 and 161 in India’s win and won Player of the Match award as well.

England captain Ben Stokes was all praises for the Indian captain, Shubman Gill. This was after England were pummeled by India by 336 runs in the second test of the five-match series at Edgbaston and leveled the series 1-1.

India scored 587 runs after losing the toss and being asked to bat first, with Shubman Gill scoring 269 and Ravindra Jadeja and Yashasvi Jaiswal scoring fifties. England answered with 407 runs, with Jamie Smith (184) and Harry Brook (158) scoring 303 runs for the sixth wicket, while Mohammed Siraj took 6/70 and Akash Deep took four wickets.

As India made 427/6d in the second innings, Shubman Gill scored 161 runs, and KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja each scored half-centuries. After needing 608 runs to win, England fell for 271 after Jamie Smith scored 88 runs. With 6/99 in the innings and 10/187 in the match, Akash Deep was the match’s standout performer.

He’s had some two games hasn’t he: Ben Stokes on Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill, in his first series as India captain, has been amazing. He scored 147 in the first test at Headingly. However, he flourished into his own as he hammered a record 269 in the first innings. It was the highest score by an Indian captain in tests and the highest by an Indian in England in tests.

He followed that up with 161 runs in the second innings, helping India pile 427/6d and set a huge target for England to chase in the last two days. With his 269 and 161, Shubman Gill made 430 runs in the test, the second most by a batter behind Graham Gooch, who made 333 and 123 against India in 1990 at the Lord’s.

Ben Stokes was all praises for his counterpart and revealed how he manipulated his field settings, despite him trying to outsmart him.

Yeah, he’s had some two games, hasn’t he? It’s one of those things where early on we’ve got plans on attacking the stumps and trying to bring in the LBW, and a couple of times early on where he’s just managed to get a little inside nick on those and those are the kind of things that happen when players are in form.

Again, he played amazingly well at Headingley first innings but these two innings he played here, especially in that first innings, you’ve got to give your opposition credit when it’s due and for him to bang out as many runs as he has done in this game has been pretty special for him,” Stokes said in the post-match press conference.

How many runs did Shubman Gill score in the Edgbaston test?

Shubman Gill scored 269 runs in the first innings and then 161 in the second innings of the Edgbaston test.
