England have a target of 371 runs to chase in the first ENG vs IND test at Headingley, Leeds.

India Cricket Team and England Cricket Team are battling it out in first test of the five-match test series at Headingley, Leeds. The fifth day of the encounter is underway on June 24 (Tuesday), and players of both teams were seen wearing black armbands.

Notably, India and England players wore black armbands on day 1 of the Headingley test to pay tribute to the victims of the Ahmedabad plane crash. A London-bound Air India plane crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12, killing 270 people.

On day 3 of the match, players wore black armbands to pay tribute to former England pacer David ‘Syd’ Lawrence, who passed away at the age of 61. The former right-arm pacer represented England in five tests and one ODI from 1988 to 1992.

Why are players wearing black armbands on day 5 of Headingley test?

On day 5, England and India players are wearing black armbands to pay tribute to former Indian spinner Dilip Doshi, who passed away last night (June 23). Doshi died at the age of 77 in London due to a cardiac arrest.

“Both teams are wearing black armbands today in memory of former Indian cricketer Dilip Doshi, who passed away on Monday. The teams also observed a minute’s silence before the start of Day 5,” BCCI posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The former left-arm orthodox spinner represented Indian Cricket Team from 1979 to 1983. Doshi clinched 114 wickets in 33 tests at an average of 30.72. He scalped 22 wickets in 15 ODIs at an average of 23.82.

Talking about the Headingley test, the Shubman Gill & Co. have set a 371-run target for the hosts. After gaining a six-run lead in the first innings, the visitors piled up 364/10 in the second innings with centuries by KL Rahul (137) and Rishabh Pant (118).

However, like the first innings, the lower-order batters failed to score runs and follow up on the good start provided by Pant and Rahul. Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue picked three-wicket hauls for England in the second innings.

Earlier in the first innings, India posted 471/10 after being asked to bat first. England piled up 465/10 in the first innings to gift a six-run lead to the visitors.
