England have made a surprise addition to their white-ball setup as they plan to begin preparations for the ICC ODI World Cup 2027.
With the tournament set to be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, the Three Lions are looking to combine their existing coaching structure with the experience of former international cricketers. The latest appointment marks the return of one of the most influential batsmen in the history of English cricket.
Kevin Pietersen, who represented England for over a decade, is returning to the national setup, this time in a mentoring role. He has been brought on board, citing his international experience and his familiarity with the South African conditions.
Pietersen, who played for England till 2014, finished his international career with 4,440 runs in ODIs at an average of 40.73, including nine centuries, and 1,176 runs in T20Is with a strike rate of 141.51. He was a crucial part of England’s squad that won the 2010 ICC T20 World Cup.

The ECB has appointed Kevin Pietersen as a specialist mentor to England men’s white-ball teams. His involvement will immediately begin during the upcoming limited-overs series against Sri Lanka.
The former English great will work alongside head coach Brendon McCullum and the rest of the coaching staff.
“I am immensely proud to have been asked to help this team on their journey to win the World Cup in South Africa. Putting on the England uniform again for the first time since 2014 is a profound honour and a deeply special moment,” Kevin Pietersen said following his appointment.
Pietersen’s involvement will extend far beyond the Sri Lanka series. England’s immediate white-ball assignments include three T20Is and three ODIs against Sri Lanka in September.
They will then travel to Australia for three more ODIs and five T20Is in November and December before heading to South Africa, where the white-ball team will feature in three ODIs in January 2027.
After completing their away schedule, they will head back to England for a five-match ODI series against Pakistan in May 2027, followed by another three-match T20I and five-match ODI series against New Zealand in September, before the team heads to the African continent for the ODI World Cup.
Given the busy white-ball cricket schedule and Pietersen’s appointment, the ECB is committed to providing the team with every possible opportunity to improve its performance in limited-overs cricket.
England produced a humiliating performance during the 2023 ODI World Cup. Pietersen’s inclusion will add another experienced voice as the team prepares towards the next marquee tournament.
