Tip Foster was the first England batsman to score a double century in test cricket.

A double century in test cricket is always a massive milestone for the batter. It is not that every day you see a batter scoring a test double century. Scoring a century and converting it into a big one puts the team on the driver’s seat.

England, who have invented cricket, have a number of players who have hit multiple double centuries in test cricket.

A total of 11 English players have hit two or more test double centuries in their career. In this article, we will talk about the list of the top five English batters with the most double hundreds in test cricket.

5. Kevin Pietersen – 3

Former English star Kevin Pietersen had a pretty successful international career for England. In test cricket, he was a run-machine and scored runs all over the world.

Pietersen scored three double centuries in his test career. His first came against West Indies at Leeds, when he scored 226. His other two other double hundreds in tests came against Australia (227) and India (202).

4. Leonard Hutton – 4

Former English captain Leonard Hutton made a massive impact on English cricket. He played 79 tests between 1937 and 1955 in Don Bradman’s era and was equally consistent with bat. Hutton scored 6971 runs at an average of 56.67. Hutton slammed 19 centuries in his career, including four double centuries.

He scored two double hundreds against West Indies and one each against New Zealand and Australia. His career-best of 364 is also the highest individual score by an England batsman in test cricket.

3. Alastair Cook – 5

Former captain Alastair Cook was one of the best test openers of all time. He had one of the best records by English batters in Asian countries. Cook played 161 matches between 2006 and 2018 in test cricket. He scored 12472 runs at an average of 45.35, with 33 centuries.

Cook made five double centuries in his career. He scored two double centuries against Australia and one each against Pakistan, India, and West Indies. 

2. Joe Root* – 6

Joe Root has broken all the records in English cricket history. He holds the record for most runs, most centuries and most half-centuries for England in test cricket. Root has so far played 147 matches and scored over 12600 runs in the format.

He has 35 centuries and 64 half-centuries to his name, along with six double centuries. He has two double centuries each against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, while one each came against India and New Zealand.

1. Wally Hammond – 7

Wally Hammond is known to be from a different league of batters who have a special place in the history of cricket. He was among the greatest batters that played for England, and his stats speak for him. He played 85 tests between 1927 and 1947 and scored 7249 runs at an average of 58.45.

Hammond scored 22 centuries and 24 half-centuries with a best of 336 not out. He slammed seven double centuries in his career. Hammond made four double centuries against Australia, two against New Zealand, and one against India.
