England hammered Oman in a one-sided contest in Antigua to give a massive boost to their net run rate.
England will be breathing a sigh of relief after they utterly demolished Oman in their Group B encounter at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in Antigua.
The Three Lions completed the match against Oman in only 99 balls to give their net run rate a massive boost and keep themselves in a decent position for qualification to the Super 8. They will still, though, need a favour from rivals Australia.
At the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua, the English bowlers first blew Oman away with both pace and spin. Jofra Archer and Mark Wood took three wickets each while conceding only 12 runs each. Then came the spin trickery of Adil Rashid, which none of the Oman batter could understand. Rashid took four wickets while giving away only 11 runs. Oman were bundled out for only 47 runs in 13.2 overs.
In the chase, the England batters didn’t waste any balls. Phil Salt smashed two sixes on the first two balls to Bilal Khan before getting out on the third. Will Jacks got out in the second over but Jos Buttler blasted 24* runs in 8 balls and Jonny Bairstow hit two fours in the two balls he faced as they chased down the target of 48 runs in only 3.1 overs.
This victory for England meant that their NRR shot up to +3.081, which is much better compared to Scotland’s NRR of +2.164. The defending champions have three points and Scotland have five. Buttler’s side will next play Namibia and Scotland face Australia.
How can England qualify for Super 8 in the T20 World Cup 2024?
To qualify for the Super 8, the equation is straightforward for England: they need to defeat Namibia and hope that Australia beat Scotland. If any of these two matches gets washed out, then Scotland will qualify for the next round.
