How can England qualify for semi-finals of ICC T20 World Cup 2024 after loss vs South Africa?

England have recorded one win and one loss in the Super 8 round.
As it happened in the group stage, England again find themselves in a virtually must-win encounter in their last Super 8 round game of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Jos Buttler’s team suffered a close loss, by only seven runs, to South Africa on Friday in St Lucia in their second match of the Super 8 round. They had won their first game of this round against the West Indies by eight wickets.
West Indies have piled up a bit more pressure on the Three Lions following their thumping victory over the USA. WI chased down the target of 129 in only 10.5 overs to give a significant boost to their net run rate. It could likely come down to net run rates in Group 2 of the Super 8 round between South Africa, England and West Indies.
Talking about Group 2 of the Super 8 round, South Africa have won both their games – against USA and England – and their net run rate is +0.625. The defending champions defeated West Indies before losing to South Africa; their NRR is +0.412. The difference in the NRR’s of these two teams is small.
West Indies, after losing to Buttler’s side, dominated the USA to end up with an NRR of +1.814, which is significantly better than the other two teams’ NRR.
The remaining fixtures in Group 2 are ENG vs USA (match 49) and WI vs SA (match 50).
How can England qualify for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024?
They need to defeat the USA by either 10 runs or an over to spare (presuming the team batting first scores 160) to pip their NRR over South Africa’s. That would seal England’s place in the semi-final and then the South Africa vs West Indies match will be a direct shootout.
If England wins by any margin and West Indies loses, then Buttler’s team will go through to the semis along with the Proteas. If England and West Indies both lose, then all three of England, West Indies and the USA will be tied on two points and then NRR will come into the picture.
