Previously England vs India test series was named after two former Indian captains â Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi.
The forthcoming five-match test series between England and India, which begins on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds, will mark the beginning of a new cycle of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 as well as a new chapter in the rivalry between the two nations, which dates back 93 years.
According to a BBC report, a new trophy named after cricketing greats James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar will be used to decide the outcome of the forthcoming test series between England and India. On June 20, the five-match series will kick off at Headingley.
The Pataudi Trophy has historically been given for the bilateral test series played in England. It was originally presented in 2007 to commemorate 75 years since the first test match between India and England.
It was named after the Pataudi family, who were the parents of two Indian captains: Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, better known as Tiger Pataudi, and Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi.
While James Anderson has the third-most wickets (704) and is the top wicket-taker among pacers in the gameâs longest format, Sachin Tendulkar has the most runs (15,921) in test cricket history. The two players with the most caps in test cricket history are Anderson (188) and Tendulkar (200).
ECB renames Pataudi Trophy to Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy
The two greats faced each other in 14 tests, with Anderson dismissing Tendulkar nine timesâthe most by any bowler against the Indian batting legend.
âThe move to honor the pair in this way mirrors the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy, named after former batters Martin Crowe of New Zealand and Englandâs Graham Thorpe. It was contested for the first time during Englandâs tour of New Zealand last year, with England winning the Test series 2-1,â the BBC report stated.
Following a 2-2 draw in a series played across 2021 and 2022 due to a Covid scare, England are the current and final holders of the Pataudi Trophy.
The âAnthony de Melloâ trophy has been used to refer to the test series between the two countries played on Indian soil since 1951-52. It is currently unknown if the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy will be utilized just in the England series or if it will also be played in India.
